Chapter Fifty-Three

The Last Reconstruction

Proof of Absence · Raktim Ranjit

Elias entered Reconstruction Suite Four for the last time on a Thursday afternoon. The room looked smaller than it had on the night the kitchen broke open. Perhaps because he no longer believed the machinery possessed hidden authority. The white acoustic panels remained white acoustic panels. The immersion chair was a chair. Sensors lay in a tray waiting for a person to give them meaning.

Ivo stood at the control desk wearing a visitor badge because he had transferred out of Morrow's reconstruction division. "You know this is a terrible place to hold a sentimental farewell."

"I am not sentimental."

"Your sister wrote jokes in your cigarette cache. You're basically a Victorian widow with databases."

Elias smiled. "Are the sources isolated?"

"Yes. No adaptive dialogue. No scene completion beyond documented geometry. Every inferred element stays visibly marked. And before you say it, yes, I verified the verifier."

"Good."

Lena had refused to supervise. She said the choice needed to be Elias's without her becoming part of the emotional frame again. Mara had declined to attend for simpler reasons. I lived through it once. Very efficient of me.

Elias sat in the chair. He had not accepted the full 2018 reconstruction offer.

Instead he requested one scene.

The original kitchen.

Not the memory.

The evidence.

"Ready?" Ivo asked.

"No."

"Excellent informed consent."

Elias lowered the headset.

The kitchen appeared.

Immediately, it was uglier than his memory. The old video had poor color. Room geometry came from photographs that did not fully agree. Missing areas remained grey rather than filled. Objects with low confidence appeared slightly translucent. A confidence band floated near the floor despite Elias's instinctive desire to turn it off.

The table was there.

The strawberry magnet.

The damaged wall.

Rain beyond the window.

Mara sat alone.

Her cup was white.

Elias did not appear across from her. There was no chair where his memory had placed him because the original recording showed that chair pushed against the wall.

He stared at the empty space. For years that space had belonged to him.

Now it did not feel like being erased. It felt like seeing the room.

Mara looked toward the recording device.

"Eli, if you're watching this, don't do the thing where you decide you've already worked out what I mean."

Source label: DIRECT AUDIO, 99.7%.

He smiled.

She spoke about Fallow. About not being fine and not being sick. About records, Lena, fear and anger. Elias listened without trying to anticipate the sentence.

Then it came.

"If I disappear, don't let them tell you I was sick."

The words remained painful.

Their meaning had changed.

They were not a prophecy spoken into Elias's hands. They were an instruction Mara left because she did not trust the systems and people around her to describe her absence honestly.

She continued.

"And don't make this into something you did. You weren't here tonight. You couldn't have stopped anything tonight because you weren't here."

Elias looked at the empty chair. For the first time he believed her.

Not because Vela said it. Not because cameras placed him elsewhere.

Not because a consent file proved the blue cup came later. He believed her because he no longer needed to be present for her fear to matter.

Lena entered the old recording carrying the canvas bag. The two women spoke about Pember. Mara looked frightened and angry and funny in the same six minutes. No reconstruction needed to choose which version was true.

When Mara returned to the camera and said, "Please don't turn me into a dead person just because you can't find me," Elias closed his eyes.

"Stop," he said.

The scene froze.

Ivo's voice entered quietly. "Want out?"

"Yes."

The kitchen vanished.

Elias removed the headset.

Ivo looked at him but did not ask how he felt.

"Delete the session?" he said.

Elias thought about it.

"No. Preserve it with source labels. No adaptive version."

"Done."

"And revoke my personal immersion access after today."

Ivo raised an eyebrow. "Permanently?"

"Until I ask to restore it through someone who has enough sense to make me wait."

"I nominate a committee of seven hostile librarians."

"Perfect."

Ivo entered the restriction.

On the desk beside the chair lay the full 2018 reconstruction proposal.

Elias picked it up.

There was still time to sign. He imagined terrible noodles. Mara's slap. Pember. Lena in 2018. All the scenes he might regain, or might only learn to experience convincingly.

He tore the signature page in half. Not because truth did not matter.

Because he had finally learned that wanting something to be a memory did not make reconstruction the only way to know it happened.

"That's dramatic," Ivo said.

Elias looked at the torn page.

"I know."

"Please never change entirely."
