Chapter Forty-Five

Recovery Sequence

Proof of Absence · Raktim Ranjit

Ivo returned to Morrow under whistleblower protection and spent his first morning proving that Elias's recent night behavior had been less mysterious than everyone feared.

"Congratulations," he said over a video call. "You did not become a sleepwalking cybercriminal. You became an extremely annoying automation."

"Explain."

Ivo shared a diagram.

The 2018 Continuity procedure had paired retrieval cues with a sequence of rehearsed actions. The sequence was not software controlling Elias. It was behavioral training supported by reminders Elias had planted in physical places and, later, by an encrypted personal script that watched his own Morrow profile for specific archive changes.

"You built a watchdog in 2018," Ivo said. "Tiny thing. It couldn't access content. It checked whether three continuity identifiers changed state. If they did, it sent a local notification to an old device account and unlocked the first cue note."

"The consent-file access three weeks ago."

"That was you too. Sort of. Your old watchdog credentials became valid again during Vela migration. The migration pinged the identifiers, the script sent you a prompt. We found the message in an archived phone backup."

Elias read it.

IF THIS FIRES, CHECK BLUE.

He did not remember receiving it.

"I probably saw it, checked the cup provenance and started the chain before consciously deciding to run Vela."

"Exactly. Your brain supplied a reason later. Anniversary, curiosity, whatever fit."

"Then the night calls?"

"Procedural state plus sleep deprivation. You weren't unconscious. You just failed to encode parts of the transitions well, especially after repeated cue exposure. Security footage shows you functional."

"Why did I remember staying at Pember longer than I did?"

"Your old rehearsal script included a forty-minute waiting phase at the station during training. Real night, you skipped it. Memory imported the practiced duration."

Elias smiled without humor. "Even my contingency plan contaminated itself."

"Systems are beautiful. People are terrible. The reverse is also true."

Ivo opened another window. "There's one thing I can't explain."

"Of course."

"The refrigerator message. DO NOT LET MARA BECOME PROOF. No rehearsal note contains it. No 2018 cue. That's current you."

Elias looked toward his kitchen. He had cleaned the marker off, but a faint grey shadow remained on the white surface.

"I wrote it half-asleep."

"Probably."

"Why?"

"I fix software. I charge extra for metaphysics."

After the call, Elias sat with the statement for a long time. Do not let Mara become proof.

He understood it now.

Through the entire investigation he had wanted Mara to prove something. That Morrow was guilty. That Elias was innocent. That the kitchen was false. That his love had been justified. That his guilt had been deserved. Even her survival threatened to become evidence in a case whose center remained Elias.

Mara was alive.

That did not mean she existed to resolve him.

The relay phone buzzed.

A message from her.

Lena says they're offering you restoration.

Elias typed:

Not restoration. Reconstruction of the missing period.

Mara replied:

That's what they call it when they want you to sign.

He smiled.

She sent another.

Are you going to do it? Elias looked at the Continuity notebooks, the Pember tape, the photograph, the blue cup, the white refrigerator with the faint marker shadow.

He wanted June 2018 back. He wanted the terrible noodles.

He wanted to remember Mara slapping him and the exact face she made before doing it. He wanted Pember Station, the last turn before the train doors closed, the argument that had led to goodbye. He wanted to know whether Lena had touched his shoulder in the car afterward. He wanted ownership of the missing months.

The wanting was enormous.

He typed:

I don't know.

Mara answered:

Good.

This time the word did not irritate him.
