Chapter Thirty-Five

The Missing-Person File

Proof of Absence · Raktim Ranjit

The police case file had been altered in 2018. Not rewritten. Not falsified. Three digital links had been sealed under a privacy order submitted by a solicitor representing an adult formerly listed as missing. The name of the adult was withheld from the family-facing copy, but the internal case identifier belonged to Mara Venn.

Elias read the order in an interview room at Dunley Central Police Station while Detective Superintendent Amara Holt, who had inherited cold-case oversight years after Mara vanished, sat across from him.

"She contacted police?" he asked.

"Through counsel."

"To say she was alive."

"To state she was alive, safe, an adult and did not consent to her current location being released."

Elias felt a pressure in his chest that was almost relief, almost anger.

"Why wasn't the missing-person case closed?"

"It was internally resolved as located alive in 2018. Public status remained restricted because of safeguarding concerns and her request. Your family was informed through a limited notification."

"No, we weren't."

Holt turned the monitor toward him. Acknowledgment form. Gabriel Venn. September 12, 2018.

Elias stared at his father's signature.

"Dad knew."

"Your father was told Mara was alive and did not wish contact. He signed a confidentiality undertaking regarding public disclosure."

The betrayal was so complete it felt almost clean.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Holt looked uncomfortable. "According to the file, you were present when the notification was given."

Elias looked up.

"I was here."

"Yes."

"In this station."

"Room may have been different."

He could not speak for several seconds.

Holt opened another document.

Statement by Elias Venn, 2018. I accept that Mara is alive and has requested no contact. I will not pursue disclosure of her location through police systems.

His signature.

Below it, an additional note:

Mr. Venn requests that future family inquiries be directed to Gabriel Venn due to ongoing clinical treatment.

Elias closed his eyes.

His father had not spent the last eight years believing Mara was dead. He had spent them protecting a fact Elias himself had asked not to be reminded of.

"Can I call him from here?"

Holt nodded.

Gabriel answered after three rings.

"Elias?"

"You knew."

Silence.

"Since 2018. You knew Mara was alive."

His father's breath came through the phone.

"Yes."

Elias stood and walked to the corner of the interview room because sitting felt impossible.

"You let me talk about her. Every year. You let me put flowers out on her birthday. You let me say maybe one day they'll find something."

"You told me to."

"Stop saying that. Everyone keeps saying I asked for this as if that makes it fine."

"It wasn't fine."

Gabriel's voice broke slightly. "None of it was fine. You came to me with Lena and a lawyer. You said Mara was alive. You said she didn't want us to know where. You said you were going through some treatment because you were afraid you'd go looking again. You made me promise I wouldn't tell you unless you asked a very specific question."

"What question?"

"You said, 'Did the police close the case because they found her alive?'"

Elias looked at Holt.

He had never asked that. Why would he? The public file remained unresolved.

"And if I asked anything else?"

"I was supposed to say I didn't know."

"You lied to me for eight years."

"Yes."

"How could you?"

Gabriel was quiet for so long Elias thought the call had dropped. Then his father said, "Because the first seven years nearly killed you. And because when you told me she was alive, I thought getting you back might be the only thing she could still give us."

Elias pressed his free hand against the wall.

"That's not your decision."

"No. It was yours."

"Apparently I make terrible decisions."

"You make terrified decisions and then turn them into principles."

The accuracy was unbearable.

Elias ended the call without saying goodbye.

Holt gave him time.

After several minutes she said, "There is one more item." Elias laughed weakly. "Of course there is."

"When Mara's case was restricted in 2018, one evidence link was removed from active police search systems. Authorization came from you as a technical consultant working with Morrow's legacy-data team."

"What link?"

Holt opened the entry.

A location inference generated from historical Fallow records. Potential address cluster for Mara Venn.

Elias had marked it contaminated and recommended deletion.

"Was it contaminated?" he asked.

"We don't know. The source model no longer exists."

"Could it have led to her?"

"Possibly."

Elias looked at his own 2018 approval signature. For the first time, the thought formed clearly.

He had not merely forgotten Mara's location. He had helped remove the trail that anyone else might have used to find her.

If Mara had later needed help, if something had happened after January, Elias might have destroyed the very evidence that could reach her.
