Chapter Thirty-Three

The Breach

Proof of Absence · Raktim Ranjit

Morrow security arrived at Elias's apartment at 7:30 the next morning with a warrant to recover proprietary data copied during the 4:14 archive breach.

Celia came with them.

"They are not searching your personal papers," she said before entering. "The order is limited to Morrow devices and the encrypted package copied from node C-17."

Elias held up the small drive. "This?"

"Yes."

"I've already opened it."

"I know."

"Then why take it now?"

"Because pretending procedure no longer matters is how we got here."

He handed it over.

The security technician placed it in an evidence pouch. Elias watched the seal close and thought of Mara's archive label on the records-suite floor. Celia stayed after the others left.

"You should see the full footage," she said.

They used Elias's television because he no longer had access to Morrow. The security video began at 4:06 a.m. with Elias entering the south door. He moved normally, not dazed, not hurried. He nodded to a night guard, signed a visitor exception on a tablet and took the lift to nine.

"I spoke to him?"

"Audio isn't retained at that desk. Guard remembers you saying you forgot something."

On the ninth floor, Elias used his badge at the restricted archive. When the first attempt failed, he entered a maintenance override code.

"I don't know that code."

"You did in 2018. It was retired in 2019 but still accepted by the legacy node."

"Why?"

"Because systems are museums of mistakes."

Inside the archive, Elias went directly to a terminal. No searching. No hesitation. He inserted the drive from his coat and copied the package. Then he did something neither had seen in the earlier log.

He opened a second folder.

Celia paused the footage.

"This is why I'm here."

"What was it?"

"Mara Venn case linkage."

Elias felt his stomach tighten.

"What did I do?"

Celia resumed.

On screen, Elias authenticated with a legacy code, selected three records and changed their relationship state from active to sealed. Then he printed a summary, folded it and put it into his pocket.

"Sealed from whom?"

"From Vela's automatic source ingestion."

"I removed Mara's records?"

"Three links."

"Which ones?"

"One is an address relation from 2018. One is a police case annotation. One is unknown because its source record was subsequently deleted."

"By me?"

"Not that night."

Elias watched himself leave the building at 4:26.

"Where is the printed summary?"

"Not found in your apartment during the limited search."

He checked the coat he had worn. Empty.

"Could I have taken it somewhere after Morrow?"

Celia opened city traffic footage. At 4:38 a camera caught Elias walking west. At 4:51 another caught him near Dunley Central Hospital.

Then he disappeared from available cameras.

"Hospital," Elias said.

"You had no appointment."

"Fallow was near the hospital."

Celia nodded.

The old Fallow Clinic building still existed, now used as administrative offices for a private physiotherapy company. Elias felt another bodily recognition. Orange chairs. Too many plants. A corridor that smelled of citrus cleaner.

"Did I go there?"

"We don't know."

"Can we check?"

Celia looked at him. "Your suspension does not prevent you from walking on a public street." It was the closest thing she ever gave to permission.

Before leaving, she said, "Elias, the fact that your conditioned route made you do something does not mean you lacked agency. You designed the route. You also designed it eight years ago for circumstances that may no longer exist."

"Meaning?"

"A contingency plan can become dangerous after the contingency changes."

He understood.

His earlier self had built automatic behaviors to protect Mara from Morrow. His present self was triggering them without knowing whether Mara still needed protection, whether Morrow was still the threat, or whether the behaviors themselves were destroying evidence he now needed.

For the first time he became afraid not of someone controlling him, but of obeying himself.
