Chapter Twenty-Four
Night Work

Lena answered on the first ring when Elias called again.
"What did I say to you at four eighteen?"
She was quiet for several seconds. "You don't remember calling."
"No."
"Where are you now?"
"Home."
"Are you injured?"
Elias looked down at his hands. A shallow cut crossed his left palm near the thumb. He had noticed it at the station and assumed he caught the locker edge.
"Minor cut."
"Do you know how you got it?"
"Probably the locker."
"Probably isn't what I asked."
He almost laughed. "You sound like me."
"You called and said the route still worked."
"What route?"
"You didn't say. Then you asked whether I had kept my promise."
"What did you answer?"
"Yes."
"Which promise?"
"You didn't specify."
"And you didn't ask?"
"I did. You said, 'If you don't know, you're not the one I meant.' Then you hung up."
Elias sat at the table. "That sounds insane."
"It sounds conditioned."
"You knew about 3:12."
Lena exhaled. "Yes."
"What is it?"
"A retrieval cue you selected during Continuity. You linked it to a chain of procedural actions. Walking route. Pember. Locker. You wanted a path that might survive even if episodic access weakened."
"Why three twelve?"
"Because it had no connection to Mara. You chose it randomly from a room clock during a session."
Elias looked at the old note impression from 2011. 3:12 had appeared beneath DON'T LET THEM CORRECT YOU.
"Then why is it in my 2011 notebook?"
"It isn't."
"I shaded an impression beneath a removed page."
Lena was silent.
"The notebook existed in 2011," he said.
"The page may have been written on later."
Of course.
He had kept old notebooks for decades. In 2018 he could have reused one, placed a sheet over a blank page, written the cue, then removed the top sheet. His mind had assigned the pressure mark to the notebook's original year.
Another false age.
"Why the anonymous call at 3:12?"
"I didn't make it."
"Who knew the cue?"
"You. Me. Jonah. Possibly one technician. Celia knew the consent structure, not all cue details."
"Mara?"
"I don't know."
After the call, Elias examined his apartment. The front-door camera showed him returning at 5:01. It also showed him leaving at 3:12. Nothing unusual.
Then he checked Morrow's access notifications. His employee badge, which he had believed was inside his desk drawer, had been used at Morrow at 4:06 a.m.
Elias opened the drawer.
The badge lay there.
He stared at it.
Cloned credential? Delayed log? Someone else using his ID?
He called Ivo.
"I am officially not helping you," Ivo said. "Tell me the technically fascinating thing I am not helping with."
Elias gave him the access event. Ivo checked from an external audit portal still available to suspended staff. "Badge read at south entrance. Then research elevator. Floor nine at four oh-nine. Restricted archive at four fourteen. Exit at four twenty-six."
"Camera?"
"I shouldn't."
"Ivo."
A long pause.
"Sending one still."
The image arrived.
Elias stood inside Morrow's south entrance at 4:06 a.m.
Same coat. Same face.
His left hand was wrapped in a white handkerchief. Elias looked at his cut palm.
"I was at Pember then."
"Were you?"
"I remember being there."
The sentence tasted wrong as soon as he said it.
"Station camera," Ivo said. "Check independent source."
Elias requested public security footage through a professional archive portal. The 4:06 frame from Pember showed no Elias near Locker 81. He searched earlier.
3:51.
There he was.
He opened the locker at 3:53. By 3:58 he had left the station.
His memory had placed him there for nearly an hour longer than reality. Enough time to reach Morrow by taxi.
"What did I access?" Elias asked.
Ivo was quiet.
"Archive node C-17. Your Continuity file."
"Can you see what I did?"
"Copied one encrypted package to removable media."
Elias searched his coat.
Inside the same hidden seam that had contained the locker key, his fingers touched hard plastic.
A small encrypted drive.
He placed it on the table. There was blood along one edge.
