Chapter Thirteen

Continuity

Proof of Absence · Raktim Ranjit

Ivo found the title at 4:06 p.m.

CONTINUITY PROCEDURE, VENN, ELIAS.

It appeared not inside the restricted clinical record but in a dependency list attached to obsolete software. The procedure itself remained inaccessible. Its support files did not. There were thirty-two asset identifiers, seven environmental profiles, four voice anchors and one object set called KITCHEN-A.

Elias read the list without touching the mouse.

"Open the environmental profiles."

"Read-only cache," Ivo said. "If governance notices, I'm blaming you with charisma."

"You don't have charisma."

"Then this is serious."

The first profile contained room impulse measurements from Calder Avenue Suite 3C. The second contained audio samples from Alder Row, recorded in 2011. Refrigerator compressor. Window under rain. Floorboard movement. Door latch.

Elias felt something cold move through him.

"They had the refrigerator sound."

Ivo looked at the waveform. "Apparently."

"The exact refrigerator in my memory."

"If this is the source, yes."

"Where did they get it?"

The accession record pointed to Fallow Clinic. Mara's home recording project had included environmental audio.

The 2018 continuity procedure combined the adult Calder Avenue room with sensory assets from the Venn apartment.

Elias sat back.

"Show KITCHEN-A."

The object set contained table geometry, window dimensions, strawberry magnet, calendar, wall damage, white ceramic cup and a substitution asset added later.

HARBOR BLUE CUP.

Added: 12 AUG 2018.

Added by: VENN, E.

Elias read his own name.

"Could that be an evaluator tag?"

Ivo did not answer immediately. "Could be."

"But?"

"Asset additions usually show the operator, not the subject. Your modern employee ID is linked to it, but the original local identifier is still in the raw metadata."

He rotated the screen slightly.

EV-042.

"Does that mean anything?" Elias asked.

"Not to me."

It meant something to Elias. His old university research participant number had been 042 in a memory study he volunteered for during postgraduate training.

He had reused the number as a private code for years. Bicycle lock. Storage box. The password to an encrypted drive that he later stopped using. He had added the blue cup.

The conclusion seemed unavoidable and absurd.

"Why would I build my own kitchen memory?"

Ivo's expression became careful. "Maybe you didn't. Maybe you worked on the asset set."

"For a procedure named after me."

"Yes, that part is less encouraging."

A file in the voice-anchor list opened automatically when Elias selected the object set. A woman's voice filled the speakers.

"Again. Start before the refrigerator stops."

Lena.

Then Elias's own voice, younger but unmistakable.

"I know where it starts."

"Knowing isn't the same as accessing."

"Don't use that voice with me."

"Which voice?"

"The one where you're already writing the note."

A chair moved.

Elias heard himself breathe.

Then the refrigerator recording began.

Click.

Low motor hum fading away.

Rain.

His younger voice whispered, "She's holding the cup wrong."

The audio ended.

Elias did not move.

Ivo slowly removed his hands from the keyboard as if the machine might accuse him of something.

"You heard that," Elias said.

"Yes."

"I was there."

"In 2018."

"Doing what?"

Ivo looked at the procedure title.

Continuity.

Neither of them said the word.
