Chapter Thirty-Nine
Checksum
Proof of Absence — Part Two: Borrowed Lives · Raktim Ranjit
The audit logs solved one mystery and created another. One file had a checksum that did not match.
It concerned Helen's Origin model. Ivo compared backups.
The version in Orpheus had been modified in 2016.
"What changed?" Elias asked.
"One voice-journal segment removed."
"Which?"
The audit log named the file: HJ-09. Gabriel's Ternmouth set contained no tape nine.
Rohe claimed not to remember it. Lena remembered only that Helen had recorded twelve.
Mara stared at the gap.
"We have eleven?"
"Ten complete, one fragment. Nine is missing entirely."
Tess searched Kade's notes. One reference appeared.
HJ-09 proves H understood transfer risk. Do not let legal call consent broad. Helen understood transfer risk.
Not just inference. Transfer.
If HJ-09 survived, it could establish that Helen had explicitly rejected reuse of her identifiable behavior in other families.
"Who deleted it in 2016?" Mara asked.
Ivo opened the audit signature. User: CELIA.DAIN.
Everyone looked at Celia. She did not deny it.
"I removed the file from active legal discovery."
Mara stood. "You what?"
"Because it contained information about a living minor who had never consented."
"Who?"
"I could not disclose that then. I can now because the person is an adult and has waived privacy."
Celia opened a sealed court authorization. The minor was Mara.
HJ-09 contained Helen discussing her daughter's participation in early memory research. Before Mara had supposedly joined Fallow.
Mara read the date. 2007.
She was thirteen.
"I was in research before Mum died."
Lena looked genuinely shocked. Celia said, "That's what the tape appears to show."
The family history shifted again. Fallow had not begun after Helen's death.
Something had started before it.
The checksum mismatch concerned a version of Helen's Origin model saved in 2016, five years after Mara disappeared and eight years after Helen died. Someone had altered the dependency record without changing the visible model outputs.
"That sounds deliberately boring," Mara said.
"The best kind of suspicious," Ivo replied.
The raw 2009 copy listed Helen's journal entries as direct calibration sources. The 2016 copy replaced several labels with FAMILY-DERIVED PRIORS and removed the individual donor identifier. No content vanished. Provenance did.
Celia leaned over the comparison. "Why 2016?"
Ivo checked migration history. That was the year Morrow prepared its first major hospital licensing package. Individual donor names created legal complications. Engineers standardized categories so partner institutions could ingest models without receiving raw identities.
"Privacy measure," Lena said.
"With a side effect," Elias replied. "Once the name disappears, later users can't distinguish Helen-derived priors from generic family priors."
Mara laughed without amusement. "We found the machine that launders a mother into a category."
The change request had been approved by three people. Rohe. Peter Kade. A legal officer named Miriam Sloane.
Kade's approval surprised Ivo. "He was obsessed with provenance."
They searched his notes and found an explanation. Kade supported pseudonymizing donor identities in downstream systems only if Orpheus retained reversible mapping under legal control. His condition appeared in the engineering memo.
The 2016 production migration omitted the reversible mapping layer.
"Who removed it?" Tess asked.
The code commit belonged to an engineer following a legal specification. The legal specification came from Sloane. Sloane had died in 2019.
Another dead end with paperwork.
Elias resisted the impulse to turn it into conspiracy. Institutions often produced irreversible harm through routine handoffs. One team requested privacy. Another simplified implementation. A third inherited the abstraction and assumed it had always been generic.
Then Ivo found a second modification in 2016.
A new source tag: PRE-FALLOW FAMILY PILOT.
The date range began in 2007.
Mara went still. "Before Aster House."
"Before the Fallow adolescent program," Lena said.
"Mum was alive."
They queried only aggregate metadata. Helen had participated in a small pre-Fallow pilot at St. Anne's during treatment. The records were absent from the public research registry.
Gabriel, called immediately, remembered meetings with Rohe before Helen died but believed they concerned recording tools for terminal patients.
"Did Mum undergo reconstruction?" Elias asked.
Gabriel shook his head on screen. "Not that I knew. She recorded journals. They showed her some voice synthesis. Once they made a version of your grandmother saying hello. Helen hated it."
"Why?"
"She said it was too polite."
Mara smiled despite herself.
The family history shifted again. Fallow had not begun after Helen's death as a response to grief. The technical and ethical questions had already been tested with Helen while she was alive.
That meant Helen had not merely become a donor by accident.
She had been a participant who asked questions the later company chose not to preserve alongside her data.
