A Shoreline for the Unfinished

Some things stay unfinished. A life can still be built around them.

Aritra has always found it easier to keep his books in order than his thoughts. At college, a question about chemistry brings him into the orbit of Anurima Das, and soon his days are shaped by shared meals, long bus rides, and afternoons by the sea.

As friendship deepens into love, Aritra and Anwesha begin imagining a future together. But love cannot protect every plan from the pressures of family, money, and time. When that future falls away, Aritra must find his own way forward, one uncertain step at a time. A quiet novel about first love, heartbreak, and the lives we build after the future we imagined changes course.

This is a work of fiction. Ramnagar, Digha, Shankarpur, and other place names refer to real locations; all characters, institutions, landmarks, relationships, timelines, and events are fictional. The story is entirely imagined and does not depict real people. Any resemblance or connection to actual people, living or dead, or actual events is entirely coincidental and unintentional.

Chapter One: The Library Table

On my first day at Shonabithi College, I kept my timetable open on my desk and copied the room numbers into the margin of my notebook. At school near Ramnagar, I had known every teacher and every shortcut. Here, the bell sent us into corridors that split around a courtyard, and I watched the other students to see which staircase led to the next class. By lunch, I could find the science rooms. I still did not know how to join a conversation.

On my second day, I reached class without checking the noticeboard. After an organic chemistry lecture, Anurima Das stopped me with a question about a reaction. Most of our classmates were already folding their notes into bags. I began to explain it in the corridor, then the next lecture bell rang and we realized we were blocking the doorway. She asked if we could meet in the library the following day.
